Juniata Professor, Jose Nieto, Publishes Book

Dr. Jose C. Nieto, Mary S. Geiger Professor of Religion and History at Juniata College, wrote a book on Spain’s social and cultural history, which was recently published in one of the leading European publishing houses. Published in Spanish in Geneva, Switzerland by Librairie Droz, S.A., the book studies the evolution of Spanish individualism.

El Renacimiento y la Otra Espana: Vision Cultural Socioespiritual, whose English title would be The Renaissance and the Other Spain: A Socio-Spiritual Cultural Vision, explores literature, art, philosophy and sociology as well as psychology and religion. Dr. Nieto’s exploration of these sources – and the ensuing cultural critical analysis of the Spanish culture – is set within a comparative study of European authors outside Spain.

Dr. Nieto says that it is not just a book but also a meditation about Spain. He studies the evolution of Spanish individualism through its three sources of religious origin – Judaism, Christianity and Islam. The sole constant elements of unity are the restraints and pain dissidents had to suffer. The vast inquiry covers not only the Spanish Renaissance and Siglo de Otro, but also the Enlightenment and the late arrival of Romanticism. The book is a study in the cultural uniqueness of Spain.

In the publisher’s catalogue description of the book, El Renacimiento y la Otra Espana: Vision Cultural Socioespiritual is characterized as "a study of dissidence: the Other Spain as a counter-power to the Official Spain."
